  PART 1 - 1700's-1900's The Common School Era   When I  read the first School: The Story of American Public Education , what stood out to me was how much schooling has always been connected to bigger issues in society. Education shaped who had opportunities who held power, and who was left behind. The book showed that throughout American history access to education was determined by things like wealth, race, and gender. At the same time, schools reflected the values of the nation passing down not only academic knowledge but also moral, religious, and cultural lessons. In our group discussion, one of the first things we noticed was how unequal access to schooling was in the early years of American education. For wealthy families, education served as a pathway to secure power and influence, while poorer families often could not afford tuition or the time away from work making education more of a privilege than a right and keeping the gap between social classes wide.   Hello, my name is Safia Ilboudo. I was born and raised in Burkina Faso, West Africa, and moved to New Jersey eight years ago. I am majoring in Accounting, and this is my final year at NJCU. I’m very excited to be finishing this chapter of my academic journey. My career goal is to build a professional path in accounting, and I hope to pursue certifications such as CPA or CMA in the future. I took this class to improve  my reading, writing, and symbolic communication throughout human history, from the first writing systems in ancient times to the modern concept of functional and critical  thinking . From this course, I hope to strengthen my understanding of accounting principles and learn how to apply them in real-world situations.
